Nicole Duval has lived on 4 continents. She moved to New York City in 1997 and began painting at the Art Students League, studying under Marybeth McKenzie, Harvey Dinnerstein and Sharon Sprung. In 2017, Nicole received her MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art. Her work has been shown in multiple group shows including Sotheby's Take Home a Nude, Single Fare 4 and Future Stories at the International Barclay's Hotel in New York City. This painting is part of a series I have been working on since 2016. In these paintings, challah dough becomes a proxy for flesh and figure. Removing the specificity of the human body, I delve into the intricacies of skin and meat: a celebration of dough personified. I seek to explore abstraction in a representational space. In this sense, tension becomes a central element of the paintings: the tension between celebration and prohibition, between figurative and non-figurative, representation and abstraction, attraction and repulsion.
